Os Haxixins.

Bio:

From the edge of a "Lost Zone" stream came "Os Haxixins". (Lost Zone is the nickname given to "Zona Leste", the east zone of Sao Paulo. This area of periphery is where the most part of garage bands of the brazilian scene appeard). Maybe because of the steam, the dust or the air of the place, they are the most obscure, psychedelic and authentic bands of the neighborhood.

Sir Uly (drums) and his friend Fabio (guitar) were influenced by the 60's unknown rock, garage punk and psychedelia. So they decided to set up a repertory "only with the fuzz pedal and courage", after they had been part of the extinct band "The Merry Pranksters".

The name of the band was born after the invitation made to the bass player Daniel Villafranca and the organ player Alexandre "Alôpra" who were inspired by the book "Le Club des Hachichin". It tells about the experiences of a group of smokers of hashish founded in 1845, which brought together artists such as Charles Baudelaire and Theophile Gautier. The meetings, held at Hotel Pimodan, served to promote the use of hashish, leading its members indulge in fantastic hallucinations and nightmares, things that the current Haxixins get identified with.

Besides the vintage appearance, the guys play only with old equipment and always when it's possible, they carry their Gianninis and Phelpas amplifiers where they go. Another distinct feature of the live presentations is the "light show" some psychedelic lights projected over the band.

On the road since 2003, they've already played in some small and unique places like "Bar do Bal" (in the very end of Sao Paulo south zone) and "Bar do Aranha" in the middle of Vila Formosa district, and also in clubs and festivals of independent music like Goiânia Noise (GO - Brazil) and Be-Bop-a-Lula (Sao Carlos - Brazil).

They were almost giving up to record an album because of the frustrated attempts to reach the sonority of the 60's bands (or at least achieve a similar style of the small and dirty recordings). In 2007, Berlin Studio became a godfather to them and with the production of Jonas Serodio (Thee Butcher's Orchestra and The Blackneedles), they finaly reached the expected result using an analogical recorder roll, valved amplifiers and vintage instruments.

The album was released by the independent portuguese label Groovie Records in 12-inch LP, presenting authoral songs soaked in lysergic acid and covers like "Dirty Old Man" (The Electras) and "In The Deep End" (Artwoods). Right after it, they had the opportunity to go on an european tour passing by Portugal, Spain and Italy.

On the trip, the band did memorable gigs in worldwide garage rock shrines like "La Pequeña Betty" and "La Gramola" (Spain), places where some important garage bands have already played. They've also played at "Skaletta" (Italy), a club where the eternal leader of "Love", Arthur Lee has already been. The album also brought some reviews in respected magazines like "Shindig" (England), "Lost In Time" (Greece) and the spanish garage punk forum "I-Punk".

Back to Brazil, the bass player Daniel left the band to dedicate yourself to another one "Os Cavernas". He was substituted by the longtime friend Caio Sergio. Quickly they were back to Berlin Studio and then they recorded two new authoral songs ("Depois de um LSD" and "Espelho Invisível") that were released in a 7-inches single, also by the portuguese label Groovie Records.

For 2009 they prepared the release of a 7-inches with four tracks by a label from Texas (USA) and they also publicized the release of the second issue of the first album (with some bonus tracks) by the american label Get Hip, that works with bands like "The Cynics" and "Ugly Beats".

The second time they went on an european tour was very important for "Os Haxixins". With many new songs on the set list, they played in notable clubs like "Gruta 77" (Madrid), Bullit (Bilbao) and maybe they the most expected gig was at "Primitive Festival". This is a festival where lots of people who realy like 60's garage rock come from everywhere to enjoy it. Acording to Dave Andriese (Primitive's organizer), "Os Haxixins" have shown how to make the real primitive rock, naked and raw. To complete the party, they had the chance to divide the stage with "The Fleshtones"

When they were back in Brazil, Caio Sergio followed his way and he's not part of "Os Haxixins" anymore, leaving a place reserved for an old friend of the band: Edu Osmédio. "Os Haxixins" always like to show the importance that CCPC (a new club where they play once a month) have been giving for garage bands with the same influences. To finish the year and start a new step, they recorded some videos on MTV, fact that has been helping them to spread their music.

OS HAXIXINS

Da beira de um córrego da Zona LOST, apelido dado para a Zona Leste da cidade de São Paulo, a parte da periferia de onde vieram as bandas mais garageiras da cena brasileira, surgem Os Haxixins. Talvez pelos vapores, a poeira ou o ar do local, eles são a banda mais obscura, psicodélica e autêntica da vizinhança.

Influenciados pelo rock obscuro dos 60's, garage punk e psicodelia, os amigos Sir Uly (bateria) e Fábio (guitarra) resolveram montar um repertório “Só com o pedal Fuzz e a coragem”, segundo o próprio Uly, depois de terem feito parte da extinta banda The Merry Pranksters.

O nome do grupo surgiu após o convite feito para o baixista Daniel Villafranca e o organista Alexandre "Alôpra" Romera, inspirados no livro “Clube dos Haxixins”, sobre as experiências de um grupo de fumantes de haxixe fundado em 1845, que reunia artistas como Charles Baudelaire e Téophile Gautier. As reuniões, realizadas no Hotel Pimodan, serviam para promover o uso de haxixe, levando seus membros a se deliciarem nas mais fantásticas alucinações e pesadelos, coisas com as quais os atuais Haxixins se identificam.

Além do visual retrô, os caras só tocam com equipamentos antigos e, sempre que possível, carregam seus Gianini Tremendões e Phelpas por onde vão. Outro diferencial das apresentações ao vivo é o "light show", projetores de luzes psicodélicas sobre a banda.

Na estrada desde meados de 2003, já tocaram em lugares ímpares, como o Bar do Bal, no extremo sul da Zona Sul, e o Bar do Aranha no coração da Vila Formosa, além de clubes do circuito de música independente e festivais, como Goiânia Noise (Goiânia) e Be-Bop-a-Lula (São Carlos).

Depois de quase desistirem de gravar um disco devido a tentativas frustradas de alcançar a sonoridade de bandas dos 60s (ou pelo menos se aproximarem do estilo das gravações, sujas e pequenas), em 2007 foram apadrinhados pelo Berlin Estúdio, produzidos por Jonas Serodio (Thee Butcher's Orchestra e The Blackneedles), e conseguiram alcançar o resultado tão esperado com o uso de gravador de rolo, amplificadores valvulados e instrumentos de época.

O disco saiu pelo selo independente português Groovie Records em vinil de 12 polegadas, apresentando composições próprias banhadas em ácido lisérgico, e covers, como "Dirty Old Man" (The Electras) e "In The Deep End" (Artwoods). Na seqüência, veio a primeira turnê européia, que passou por Portugal, Espanha e Itália.

Na viagem, a banda fez shows memoráveis em santuários do garage rock mundial, como La Pequeña Betty e La Gramola (Espanha) por onde já passaram importantes bandas da cena garagera e Skalleta (Itália), por onde já passou o eterno líder do Love, Arthur Lee. O disco também trouxe resenhas em publicações conceituadas, como Shinding (Inglaterra) e Lost In Tyme (Grécia), além do portal de garage punk espanhol I-Punk.

De volta ao Brasil, o baixista Daniel deixou a banda para se dedicar a outro combo, Os Cavernas, e foi substituído pelo amigo de longa data, Caio Sérgio. Logo voltaram ao Berlin Estúdio e registraram duas composições próprias ("Depois de um LSD" e "Espelho Invisível"), que saíram num compacto simples, também pelo selo português Groovie Records.

Para 2009, preparam o lançamento de um compacto duplo por um selo do Texas (EUA) e aguardam o relançamento do primeiro álbum pelo selo americano Get Hip, também dos EUA, casa de bandas como The Cynics e Ugly Beats.

A segunda passagem pela Europa teve uma grande marca para Os Haxixims. Com o set list recheado de músicas inétidas, tocaram em clubes importantes como Gruta 77 (Madri)d), Bullitt (Bilabao) e talvez o mais esperado, Primitive Festival. Um Festival que conta com os apreciadores da garage sessentista de todo o continente velho e outros. Segundo palavras do organizador do festival, Dave Andriese, Os Haxixins mostraram como se faz o vedadeiro rock primitivo, nú e cru. Sem contar que dividiram o palco com a banda Fleshtones dos anos 80. De volta ao Brasil, Caio Sérgio seguiu seu rumo e hoje não faz mais parte dos Haxixins, dando lugar para o antigo amigo da banda Edu Osmédio. Os Haxixins fazem questão de ressaltar o CCPC, um novo clube que tocam todo mês. Um lugar que abraçou a verdadeira causa da garage e que dá oportunidade para bandas com as mesmas referências que os Haxixins para tocar.
