This remarkable new cross-generational big band comes from the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil.
For nearly 20 years, that region — particularly Recife, its port city — has been worth watching:
it’s a place where the strong old local rhythms like ciranda and maracatu mesh naturally with hip-hop and rock.
With 12 pieces, including tuba, trombone, saxophones, violin, percussion and voices, the band compounds those
earlier mixtures with Afrobeat and ska.
On its remarkable self-titled first album (released by Som Livre Apresenta) you hear parade-samba rhythms,
echoey guitar, brass and reed sections alternately booming and muted with jazz arrangements, the rustic scrape
of a violin and anthemic choruses. It hasn’t been picked up for American distribution.

Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda is the symbol of strength and inventiveness of the music of Pernambuco that Brazil and the world have learned to admire.
Conceived by Gilú (percussionist), Orquestra is the meeting of some of the Best musicians of Pernambuco who have worldwide known works – and were not satisfied with the traditional bass-drums-guitar band formation – with experienced instrumentalists of the Frevo..s orchestra of more than 50 years of existence.
Gilú, Hugo Gila, Tiné, Maciel Salú, Rapha B. and Juliano Holanda constitute the first half of the band, which accounts for its creative basis. They come in tune with the experience of their previous works in bands like Bonsucesso Samba Clube, Academia da Berlinda, Variant, DJ Dolores e Orchestra Santa Massa, Terno do Terreiro and many other projects.
The other half comes from Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias, led by Maestro Ivan do Espírito Santo (alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax and flute). The other members of Orquestra – Daniel Marinho (trumpet), Ibraim Genuíno (trombone) and Alex Santana (bass horn) – are musicians who learned their craft in this musical society founded in 1954, which is the first nonprofit musical school of Cidade Alta de Olinda (Pernambuco) and holds until today educational and cultural programs in favour of the community development.
Thereafter, it was a matter of months for the “big band” of Olinda become known to the audience and recommended by critics worldwide. Amid concerts throughout Brazil the band has prepared its first album..s repertoire, released in 2008 and distributed by Som Livre (Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda - 2008, Som Livre).
Among latin grooves, afro beats and rhythms of Pernambuco, the Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda has built its own well-shaped and concise identity. This merit is shared by a cast of ten musicians with different backgrounds and one same .. the intention of making innovative music, in all senses, from the avant-garde reinvention of classics to the smoothness of excellent melodic lines. A new sound, shaped by well “embedded” arrangements of its brass band.

Creator of the Orquestra, this percussionist of Olinda communicates his well-defined and unique identity through his original work on stages of Brazil and abroad. When was still in the beginning of the career he had already played with: Naná Vasconcelos, Erasto Vasconcelos, Mundo Livre, Otto, Silvério Pessoa, and others. Has been featuring on the CD recordings of Chão e Chinelo, Bonsucesso Samba Clube and Renata Rosa, with whom he traveled through Europe. In Europe, participated in pianist Marcelo Bratk..s (London Symphony Orchestra..s soloist) project Trilogia do Carnaval. He was founding member of the groups A Roda (among Gabriel Melo and Yuri Habib) and Academia da Berlinda.

The singer, composer and songwriter Tiné was born in Arcoverde, city of Cordel do Fogo Encantado and also of the traditional group Samba de Coco Raízes de Arcoverde, two solid influences undoubtedly present in his work. In Recife he is known for his participation in the group Academia da Berlinda. He featured on Maciel Salú..s project Terno do Terreiro. Moreover, in 2004 Tiné released his solo album Segura o Cordão, in which he shows his own and also his partners.. compositions, with arrangements and music production by the violeiro (guitar player) Caçapa. One of its tracks, the song Cobrinha, was included in the compilation What's Happening in Pernambuco, released in the United States by David Byrne's label Luaka Bop. MACIEL SALÚ

The rabequeiro (rabeca player), singer and composer Maciel Salú has a privileged poetic and musical heritage: he had grown up in contact with masters of the traditional culture. His childhood was enriched by rhythms such as Maracatu Rural, Cavalo Marinho and Ciranda, all manifestations of popular/traditional culture, fomented in his family by his grandfather João Salu and his father Mestre Salustiano. Ten years ago, has performed with the group Chão e Chinelo in national and international festivals such as in Nantes, France. Subsequently, became a member of Orchestra Santa Massa, led by DJ Dolores; they have been acclaimed at Free Jazz, Abril Pro Rock, New York..s Lincoln Center festivals and also in the European Tour in over nine countries. In 2004, he began working solo and released his first album, A Pisada, warmly received by the audience and the critics. The second, Na luz do carbureto, was released in 2006.

Juliano Ferreira Holanda is an ..in demand.. musician, composer, songwriter and music producer. He has works in which he plays the electric guitar as well as bass, acoustic guitar, seven-string guitar, Brazilian viola, ten-string guitar, viola de cocho, bandolim and acoustic bass guitar. In recent years he has featured in and composed or produced for a wide range of projects and bands such as Azabumba, Forró Rabecado, Maciel Salú e o Terno de Terreiro, Alessandra Leão, Erasto Vasconcelos, Zeh Rocha, Negroove, Dona Cila e seus Pupilos, Isidro, Tonino Arcoverde, Geraldo Maia, Treminhão, Amoenda, Folia de Santo and Mio Mazda meets Deep Samba.

GRÊMIO MUSICAL HENRIQUE DIAS
Founded on April 30, 1954, the Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias is responsible of being the first professional school of musicians in Olinda. Nonprofit. Educational and cultural activities are held to date in favor of community development and of students of low income in Cidade Alta, Olinda-Pernambuco. In those 55 years of activities, the school has formed thousands of musicians, who became able to play all musical genres, including Pernambuco..s. Since 2001, the orchestra is led by saxophonist and conductor Ivan do Espírito Santo, conductor as well of the Banda Militar da Aeronáutica in Pernambuco, and member of the Orquestra Popular do Recife. The orchestra's repertoire embraces rhythms of Pernambuco including Frevo, Coco and Maracatu.

Sua infância foi enriquecida pelos ritmos do maracatu rural, cavalo marinho, ciranda e outros, cultivados em sua família por seu avô João Salú, e por seu pai, Mestre Salustiano. Há 10 anos, com o grupo Chão e Chinelo, participou de festivais nacionais e internacionais, como em Nantes, na França. Posteriormente, se integrou à Orquestra Santa Massa, liderada por DJ Dolores, e aplaudida no Free Jazz, Abril pro Rock, festival Lincoln Center, em Nova York e na European Tour em mais nove países. Fundado em 30 de abril de 1954, o Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias traz consigo a responsabilidade de ser a primeira escola profissionalizante de músicos de Olinda. Sem fins lucrativos. Realiza até hoje programas educacionais, culturais e de desenvolvimento comunitário na cidade Alta de Olinda – basicamente voltados para alunos da comunidade de baixo poder aquisitivo. Nesses 54 anos de atividades, formou milhares de músicos aptos a tocar todos os gêneros musicais, inclusive os pernambucanos. Há sete anos a orquestra é dirigida pelo saxofonista e maestro Ivan do Espírito Santo, regente da Banda Militar da Aeronáutica em Pernambuco, e integrante da Orquestra Popular do Recife. With innovative brass, string, and percussion arrangements, each track shows a richness which is increasingly rare in today's Brazilian popular music. Based on the slopes of the historic city of Olinda, the music is a result of a rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic laboratory envisioned by percussionist Gilú in 2006.
The musicians experiment freely to uncover new ground in the pop universe.
The use of unusual instruments in pop music is one of several attractions of the album - the art of the cover, designed by Olinda based artist Paulinho do Amparo, reinforces the unique instrumental sound the group. As in the introduction of the song "Canto da Sereia", interpreted by a tuba, an instrument almost in extinction in popular music for lack of players who know how to play it.

The first half of the team answers the basic creative roles, and already come to the band tuned from other projects: Gilú, Tiné and Hugo Gila, from the bohemian musical society Academy de Berlinda; Tiné and Maciel Salú, from the project Terno do Terreiro; Raphael, who played with Gilú in Bonsucesso Samba Club, and has at least 10 years playing with bassist Hugo Gila in several projects. The other half comes from the Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias, a pioneer of vocational schooling for musicians in Olinda (founded in April 30, 1954). Despite the tradition, there were times when the school did not receive proper recognition. "I saw the need to embed these musicians in the labor market. From the question, 'Why don't they play with anyone?', came the idea of the Orchestra," says Gilú.

Between concerts at festivals such as Abril Pro Rock, Rec Beat, Marco Zero, and Festival of Garanhuns, began the tests that generated the little disc now in your hands. Recorded at the Fabrica Studios between November 2007 and February 2008 - with resources from the Fund of Encouragement for the Culture of the State of Pernambuco - the CD will be distributed nationally by Som Livre Displays, a record label devoted to mapping out the recent Brazilian musical production. Listening to the eleven tracks, the music speaks for itself. The song "Tá Falado" exposes the need for expression: "To tell you about what I know, we need a song." "Ladeira", inspired by the story of a friend who was living in Madrid, is about giving yourself to life, even if you're experiencing loneliness and longing. "Durante o Carnaval" and "Saúde" are unpublished songs that Tiné had written awhile ago, and were provided with a collective arrangement. "Joga do Peito", where Tiné demonstrates his talent not only as songwriter, but as a vocalist, to position the instrumental voice in counterpoint. Following, "Brigitti", the luminous voice of special guest Isaar de França seduces and plays in a conversation, in which the guitar, Juliano Hollanda is the male "voice". "Balcão da Venda", partnership between Juliano and Salú, speaks of the daily life of an independent woman, who works during the day in order to drink "a few" at night. Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda is the symbol of strength and inventiveness of the music of Pernambuco that Brazil and the world have learned to admire.
Conceived by Gilú (percussionist), Orquestra is the meeting of some of the Best musicians of Pernambuco who have worldwide known works – and were not satisfied with the traditional bass-drums-guitar band formation – with experienced instrumentalists of the Frevo..s orchestra of more than 50 years of existence.
Gilú, Hugo Gila, Tiné, Maciel Salú, Rapha B. and Juliano Holanda constitute the first half of the band, which accounts for its creative basis. They come in tune with the experience of their previous works in bands like Bonsucesso Samba Clube, Academia da Berlinda, Variant, DJ Dolores e Orchestra Santa Massa, Terno do Terreiro and many other projects.
The other half comes from Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias, led by Maestro Ivan do Espírito Santo (alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax and flute). The other members of Orquestra – Daniel Marinho (trumpet), Ibraim Genuíno (trombone) and Alex Santana (bass horn) – are musicians who learned their craft in this musical society founded in 1954, which is the first nonprofit musical school of Cidade Alta de Olinda (Pernambuco) and holds until today educational and cultural programs in favour of the community development.
Thereafter, it was a matter of months for the “big band” of Olinda become known to the audience and recommended by critics worldwide. Amid concerts throughout Brazil the band has prepared its first album..s repertoire, released in 2008 and distributed by Som Livre (Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda - 2008, Som Livre).
Among latin grooves, afro beats and rhythms of Pernambuco, the Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda has built its own well-shaped and concise identity. This merit is shared by a cast of ten musicians with different backgrounds and one same .. the intention of making innovative music, in all senses, from the avant-garde reinvention of classics to the smoothness of excellent melodic lines. A new sound, shaped by well “embedded” arrangements of its brass band.

Creator of the Orquestra, this percussionist of Olinda communicates his well-defined and unique identity through his original work on stages of Brazil and abroad. When was still in the beginning of the career he had already played with: Naná Vasconcelos, Erasto Vasconcelos, Mundo Livre, Otto, Silvério Pessoa, and others. Has been featuring on the CD recordings of Chão e Chinelo, Bonsucesso Samba Clube and Renata Rosa, with whom he traveled through Europe. In Europe, participated in pianist Marcelo Bratk..s (London Symphony Orchestra..s soloist) project Trilogia do Carnaval. He was founding member of the groups A Roda (among Gabriel Melo and Yuri Habib) and Academia da Berlinda.

The singer, composer and songwriter Tiné was born in Arcoverde, city of Cordel do Fogo Encantado and also of the traditional group Samba de Coco Raízes de Arcoverde, two solid influences undoubtedly present in his work. In Recife he is known for his participation in the group Academia da Berlinda. He featured on Maciel Salú..s project Terno do Terreiro. Moreover, in 2004 Tiné released his solo album Segura o Cordão, in which he shows his own and also his partners.. compositions, with arrangements and music production by the violeiro (guitar player) Caçapa. One of its tracks, the song Cobrinha, was included in the compilation What's Happening in Pernambuco, released in the United States by David Byrne's label Luaka Bop. MACIEL SALÚ

The rabequeiro (rabeca player), singer and composer Maciel Salú has a privileged poetic and musical heritage: he had grown up in contact with masters of the traditional culture. His childhood was enriched by rhythms such as Maracatu Rural, Cavalo Marinho and Ciranda, all manifestations of popular/traditional culture, fomented in his family by his grandfather João Salu and his father Mestre Salustiano. Ten years ago, has performed with the group Chão e Chinelo in national and international festivals such as in Nantes, France. Subsequently, became a member of Orchestra Santa Massa, led by DJ Dolores; they have been acclaimed at Free Jazz, Abril Pro Rock, New York..s Lincoln Center festivals and also in the European Tour in over nine countries. In 2004, he began working solo and released his first album, A Pisada, warmly received by the audience and the critics. The second, Na luz do carbureto, was released in 2006.

Juliano Ferreira Holanda is an ..in demand.. musician, composer, songwriter and music producer. He has works in which he plays the electric guitar as well as bass, acoustic guitar, seven-string guitar, Brazilian viola, ten-string guitar, viola de cocho, bandolim and acoustic bass guitar. In recent years he has featured in and composed or produced for a wide range of projects and bands such as Azabumba, Forró Rabecado, Maciel Salú e o Terno de Terreiro, Alessandra Leão, Erasto Vasconcelos, Zeh Rocha, Negroove, Dona Cila e seus Pupilos, Isidro, Tonino Arcoverde, Geraldo Maia, Treminhão, Amoenda, Folia de Santo and Mio Mazda meets Deep Samba.

Hugo Gila..s long-time partner, the drummer Raphael Beltrão has performed with Songo, Variant TL and China. He has been featured on the album recordings of artists such as Bonsucesso Samba Clube, Geraldo Azevedo, Zé Cafofinho e suas Correntes and Variant (dividing drums with Nação Zumbi..s Pupillo). Thus, he completes the bass-percussion-drums core, that is, the “heart” of Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda.

GRÊMIO MUSICAL HENRIQUE DIAS
Founded on April 30, 1954, the Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias is responsible of being the first professional school of musicians in Olinda. Nonprofit. Educational and cultural activities are held to date in favor of community development and of students of low income in Cidade Alta, Olinda-Pernambuco. In those 55 years of activities, the school has formed thousands of musicians, who became able to play all musical genres, including Pernambuco..s. Since 2001, the orchestra is led by saxophonist and conductor Ivan do Espírito Santo, conductor as well of the Banda Militar da Aeronáutica in Pernambuco, and member of the Orquestra Popular do Recife. The orchestra's repertoire embraces rhythms of Pernambuco including Frevo, Coco and Maracatu.

No Recife, é conhecido por seu trabalho no grupo Academia da Berlinda. Com Maciel Salú, participou do projeto Terno do Terreiro. Além disso, em 2004 Tiné lançou o disco solo, Segura o Cordão, com composições próprias e de parceiros, e produção musical e arranjos do violeiro Caçapa. Uma das faixas, a canção Cobrinha, foi incluída na coletânea What's Happening in Pernambuco lançada nos Estados Unidos pelo selo Luaka Bop, de David Byrne. Tendo crescido em contato com mestres da cultura popular, o rabequeiro, cantor e compositor Maciel Salú tem uma herança poético-musical privilegiada. Sua infância foi enriquecida pelos ritmos do maracatu rural, cavalo marinho, ciranda e outros, cultivados em sua família por seu avô João Salú, e por seu pai, Mestre Salustiano. Há 10 anos, com o grupo Chão e Chinelo, participou de festivais nacionais e internacionais, como em Nantes, na França. Posteriormente, se integrou à Orquestra Santa Massa, liderada por DJ Dolores, e aplaudida no Free Jazz, Abril pro Rock, festival Lincoln Center, em Nova York e na European Tour em mais nove países. Em 2004, iniciou trabalho solo, com o disco A pisada sucesso de público e crítica. O segundo, Na Luz do Carbureto, foi lançado em 2006.

Juliano Ferreira Holanda é um instrumentista, compositor e produtor musical bastante requisitado. Tem trabalhos com guitarra, baixo, violão, violão de sete cordas, viola, viola de 10 cordas, viola de cocho, bandolim e baixolão. Fundado em 30 de abril de 1954, o Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias traz consigo a responsabilidade de ser a primeira escola profissionalizante de músicos de Olinda. Sem fins lucrativos. Realiza até hoje programas educacionais, culturais e de desenvolvimento comunitário na cidade Alta de Olinda – basicamente voltados para alunos da comunidade de baixo poder aquisitivo. Nesses 54 anos de atividades, formou milhares de músicos aptos a tocar todos os gêneros musicais, inclusive os pernambucanos. Há sete anos a orquestra é dirigida pelo saxofonista e maestro Ivan do Espírito Santo, regente da Banda Militar da Aeronáutica em Pernambuco, e integrante da Orquestra Popular do Recife. With innovative brass, string, and percussion arrangements, each track shows a richness which is increasingly rare in today's Brazilian popular music. Based on the slopes of the historic city of Olinda, the music is a result of a rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic laboratory envisioned by percussionist Gilú in 2006.
The musicians experiment freely to uncover new ground in the pop universe.
The use of unusual instruments in pop music is one of several attractions of the album - the art of the cover, designed by Olinda based artist Paulinho do Amparo, reinforces the unique instrumental sound the group. As in the introduction of the song "Canto da Sereia", interpreted by a tuba, an instrument almost in extinction in popular music for lack of players who know how to play it.

The first half of the team answers the basic creative roles, and already come to the band tuned from other projects: Gilú, Tiné and Hugo Gila, from the bohemian musical society Academy de Berlinda; Tiné and Maciel Salú, from the project Terno do Terreiro; Raphael, who played with Gilú in Bonsucesso Samba Club, and has at least 10 years playing with bassist Hugo Gila in several projects. The other half comes from the Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias, a pioneer of vocational schooling for musicians in Olinda (founded in April 30, 1954). Despite the tradition, there were times when the school did not receive proper recognition. "I saw the need to embed these musicians in the labor market. From the question, 'Why don't they play with anyone?', came the idea of the Orchestra," says Gilú.

Between concerts at festivals such as Abril Pro Rock, Rec Beat, Marco Zero, and Festival of Garanhuns, began the tests that generated the little disc now in your hands. Recorded at the Fabrica Studios between November 2007 and February 2008 - with resources from the Fund of Encouragement for the Culture of the State of Pernambuco - the CD will be distributed nationally by Som Livre Displays, a record label devoted to mapping out the recent Brazilian musical production. The brass are arranged by the experienced conductor Ivan do Espírito Santo, seven years at the helm of the Grêmio Musical Henrique Dias with the exception of "Tá Falado" and "Joga do Peito", which won special treatment by the maestro Ademir Araujo, conductor of the Orquestra Popular do Recife.

Listening to the eleven tracks, the music speaks for itself. The song "Tá Falado" exposes the need for expression: "To tell you about what I know, we need a song." "Ladeira", inspired by the story of a friend who was living in Madrid, is about giving yourself to life, even if you're experiencing loneliness and longing. "Durante o Carnaval" and "Saúde" are unpublished songs that Tiné had written awhile ago, and were provided with a collective arrangement. "Joga do Peito", where Tiné demonstrates his talent not only as songwriter, but as a vocalist, to position the instrumental voice in counterpoint. Following, "Brigitti", the luminous voice of special guest Isaar de França seduces and plays in a conversation, in which the guitar, Juliano Hollanda is the male "voice". "Balcão da Venda", partnership between Juliano and Salú, speaks of the daily life of an independent woman, who works during the day in order to drink "a few" at night. The lyric does not say, but there will hardly be any hangover the next day.
