The interview is in portuguese, so I translated into english here.
I didn`t know the band until Carla send me the two demo CDs. Please, make a presentation of the band and of the released materials.
The band started in 2008, about March, with Robinho on the guitar and voice, me (Caio) on bass and backing vocals and Nicolas on drums, the idea was to play a more traditional powerviolence in the Californian way, the first wave of powerviolence. The band name came from a joke, in changing the name of the bands, like Skull Elastic Death, Fag Nasty… The first demo “Monster Inside Us” was recorded in September 2008, but who recorded the drums was also Robinho, because Nicolas was grounded (he had 15 years old). As time passes we tried to escape a little from the traditional powerviolence “recipe” and started to put some different elements, like a little bit of thrashcore, shared more the vocals and other stuff. In the beginning of 2009 we started to record new songs, for the split with OBSESIF KOMPULSIF, we also released this songs as a “second” demo, titled “Perigo na Baía de Tóquio (Danger in Tokyo Bay)”. Now in the end of 2009 Nicolas leave the band and who takes over the drums is our friend Rafael “Fralda”.
You released a split with the band OBSESIF KOMPULSIF, from Indonésia, how did the contact and the release?
Caio: The OxKx guys heard the band in Myspace, liked and made this great invitation for us, that we accepted with all pleasure. We recorded the songs on Robinho`s room, he himself made the mixing and mastering, and send it to them. The other things, like the artwork and the CD pressing, were done there, that is cheaper there. Who helped to release it was the Indonesian Teriak Records, Tarung Records and Suhaktor Records, Sukma Records from Malysia, Beat the Meat and Buddha Khan Records from USA and the Russian Lost Cause Records.
Robinho: I keep touch with some friends from Indonesia a while ago, since Bandana Revenge (RIP). They are all crazy (in the good way), love fast and ugly music. I remember when Fred (OxKx vocalist) sent me an e-mail asking if we were interested in releasing something with them, because his friend Ari, from Teriak Records, wanted to release them album.
Is perceptible that ELASTICDEATH are followers of SPAZZ and all good powerviolence bands and Japanese hardcore. Could you introduce bands and seals, because until today a few people know powerviolence?
Caio: Some countries with really good bands are Canada, with WARHERO, KALI, STEGASOURUS BEACH DEFENSE, and Chile, with UNABOMBER, DISPUTA, SOBRAS DEL DESCONTENTO (that have a split with the brazilian B.I.T.C.H.), RICHARD HARRISON... From Scotland there`s WHEELCHAIR WHEELCHAIR WHEELCHAIR WHEELCHAIR (that will share a split 12” with us by the german TVG Records), from Turkey ULTIMATE BLOW UP, from France RAINBOW OF DEATH, from USA beside the classical, like CROSSED OUT, LACK OF INTEREST, MAN IS THE BASTARD, some new are pretty cool like HOY PINOY, EL MARIACHI, SHAOLIN FINGER JABB, APATHETIC RONALD MCDONALD… There`s a lot of fun stuff!
Robinho: And there`s no noise in Brazil? Yes, there is! LA REVANCHA (RIP), AJUDANTI DI PAPAI NOEL (RIP), CHUCK NORRIS (RIP), JAZZÜS (RIP), ISABELLA SUPERSTAR, CÄTÄRRO, DERCI GONÇALVES, XAMORX, CÜ SÜJO, ABRAVANEL, ATAQUE PRERIFÉRICO. I recommend the classic 4way “Vila Velha Noise Beach” released by Laja Records. EL NUDO and SLIGHT SLAPPERS from Japan, EXTORTION from Australia (The “Terminal Cancer” EP is beautiful), from USA I could say BASTARDASS, KNUCKLE SCRAPER, FINAL DRAFT, GET DESTROYED, WEEKEND NACHOS, MINDLESS MUTANT (that had Max Ward on drums), APARTMENT 213, CHOPPING BLOCK (reminds INFEST) and GODSTOMPER. Recently, I had the pleasure to know LOW THREAT PROFILE, that has the members of INFEST, NO COMMENT and LACK OF INTEREST. The perfect combination. Their 7” is just out by Deep Six Records.
The Japanese series were present in my childhood in the 80`s. And in your childhood, which were the series and cartoons that were more present?
Caio: I like “Jiraiya” and “Kamen Rider” a lot, there`s also “Changeman”, “Flashman”, “Goggle Five”, “Ultraman”s, almost everything that passed around here we watched! And if didn`t watched, we watch now on the internet or dvd, and the series that are still being released in Japan. An animation that I like a lot is “Akira”, a classic from the 80’s.
Robinho: Besides those that Caio said, I also watched some new tokusatsus, like “Garo” (recommended), “Ultraman Nexus”, “Ultraman Max”, “Kamen Rider Den-O”, “Kamen Rider Kiva”, “Magiranger”, “Boukenger”. Of anime I know just some classics like Dragon Ball, Knights of the Zodiac and Yu Yu Hakusho. In the city of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, there`s some guys that produced a tokusatsu called PATRULHA CÓSMICA CYBERBIO (COSMIC PATROL CYBERBIO). The hero Guncyber is on our second demo cover.
How`s the punk-hardcore scenario where you live, bands, places to play, zines, protests and whehever?
Caio: In the city of Resende things are a little static, by lack of collaboration from the juvenile and rebel audience, but from there we have our friends from Macacos Sem Deus, a free zine made by Ive and Fralda, that play in RICTO MAFIA, most of the rock/punk events in the city are organized by them, but the places to play are few. In the neighbors cities Barra Mansa and Volta Redonda , there are some bands, a few independent shows. In the matter of zines, I guess there`s only Carla, with TRUE LIES and HISTÉRICA, she also organized a cool swap bazaar called THING SWAP.
Robinho: Like Caio said, things here are small. As expected, a lot of times the audience doesn`t help. Bu today I can see a (better) change in the people around here, after that some troubles happened here, haha. Me and some friends organized the ZOMBIE CREW FEST, that had 12 official events and 4 non-oficial, that had bands like VELHO DE CÂNCER, NIEU DIEU NIEU MAITRE, CÄTÄRRO, LEI DO CÃO, EMATOMA and some others.
The space is yours…
Caio: Thanks for the space and interest, Maikon, first. Thanks to everyone that like the band, for the comments, Carla for always helping us to spread the band, our friends and families, Eiji Tsuburaya, Sega and Nintendo, haha. For future projects we have a 12” split with WHEELCHAIR 4x, a 7” 4way in Canada and a split with ISABELLA SUPERSTAR.
Robinho: Thanks a lot, Maikon, for the space, it means a lot to us. And everyone that like the band and support us! See you, of course, in the circle pit!
