CAIS SODRÉ CABARET! aims to celebrate the times when gentlemen wore hats and ladies wore gloves...a celebration of the style and glamour of another epoch. In Portugal, during the 20's and 30', there were many clubs and cafes that held writers, artists and intellectuals meetings. When the dictatorship and the " Portugal - proudly alone!" mentality arrived, most of the novelties stayed away from the territory during 40 years. Changing times came in non-directly or in an illegal way. Charming actors and Hollywood divas ostentation created new styles in fashion on Sunday cinema matinees. Burlesque stars filled in foreign magazines pages. Portuguese show girls from Parque Mayer imitated Broadway vaudeville acts and night clubs and cabarets (like the legendary Maxime) in Lisbon received all kinds of bohemian people and free thinkers. We aim to recreate a retro atmosphere associated to a bohemian night life celebration where the parties and the pleasure priority. Music, dancing, drinking and smoking. But also the sordid and decadent atmosphere of the Cais do Sodré. It was on it's dark and dirty alleys, street corners and sidewalks, illuminated by neon light announcing bars with revered city names, where hookers ladies and their pimps, policemen, dockers and all kinds of clients hungry for emotions walked on by, where sailors brought in the first american rock'n'roll records.
