After a surprising solo debut, Armando Lôbo presents his second work “Vulgar & Sublime”. The album gathers all elements of the composer’s signature style: poetical and dissonant content, combination of Brazilian rhythms – maracatu, ciranda, baião, samba – and intriguing arrangements, resulting in a contemporary sound, ranging from popular tradition to classical music in not so usual ways.

Depois de surpreender em seu primeiro disco solo, o pernambucano Armando Lôbo apresenta em 2008 “Vulgar e Sublime”. Estão presentes os elementos que são a marca do compositor: alta voltagem poética, combinação de ritmos – maracatu, ciranda, baião, samba – e arranjos intrigantes, que resultam em uma sonoridade contemporânea, percorrendo da tradição brasileira à música erudita de várias tendências.

Quite tricky to categorize: Armando Lôbo could easily fit the MPB (acronym for Brazilian Popular Music), singer-songwriter, jazz/world fusion, or even contemporary pop shelves at a cd store. All these genres apply, but do not do the work of this relentless composer justice. Armando makes universal music, while keeping his personal local accent.

Instrumental pieces, intriguing harmony and varied references reveal a complete musician in pursuit of that unique matter which makes true classics survive their time. Armando Lôbo explores different composition techniques acquired during his classical studies, as well as new ones created from scratch, influenced by Reich, Stravinsky and Villa-Lobos. Singing and playing the guitar along with a talented band, Armando also surprises his audiences as a vigorous performer.

Armando's music reveals his personal taste and search for transcendence, as in Alegria dos Homens (in english Joy of Man's Desiring, a reference to Bach), his debut album which earned 5 star ratings from the main critics and newspapers in all the country and abroad.

A pleasant surprise, no matter one’s taste in music - or religious belief.

This second solo work sounds well to international ears: the album is filled with rock n'roll drive as well as traditional brazilian rhythms, such as baião, maracatu, ciranda, afoxé, and even Bossa Nova and Sufi music. The opening track S.O.S. Reversos is an experimental pop song in six-four time and also a music palindrome - just like the title, all verses are read the same back and forth, and so is the bass line. Ciranda Lounge is an instrumental fusion jewel, with a dash of irony towards his home state’s “multi-culturalism”. Its form is inspired by the baroque passacaglia and the minimalism of American composer Steve Reich. Nick Cave's As I Sat Sadly by Her side earned a ciranda cover version, featuring Swedish singer and composer Lina Nyberg in the vocals.
